Doing the Cascade Loop - Washington Pass Overlook
When we woke up to unexpected sunshine, I knew our plans for the day were going to change.
Yesterday when we had passed the Washington Pass Lookout not only was the road gated off, but the mountains were also under cloud cover. It seemed pointless to stop, so we crossed our fingers for better weather in the next day or two and kept driving.
After a brief discussion we decided to take advantage of the clear weather while it was here and headed back over Hwy 20 towards Washington Pass Overlook and hopefully for views of Liberty Bell and the other mountains.
The views were breathtaking! As we were there the clouds lifted around the Liberty Bell allowing us to get some of the pictures we were after. We had fun using some of the ground puddles to capture reflections of the mountain.
Liberty Bell was just peaking out of the clouds as we approached. Much better than yesterday. We turned off the road expecting to park and walk and…. Hurray! The gate was OPEN!!!
There were only 1 or 2 other cars in the parking lot. We nearly had the whole place to ourselves. There were still some clouds in the sky as we got out of the car and began to take pictures. And then it began to snow a little. I was glad to have my hiking boots because the trail was halfway covered with snow.
After a while the clouds came back in. By the time we left, the mountains were mostly hidden by the clouds again, and the parking lot was filling up with cars and people. Our timing had been perfect!
So we headed back toward the Methow Valley and the rest of the day’s adventures.
