Point Robinson Full Moon Rise

We wanted to get some photographs of the full moon rise happening in a few days, and wanted to make an adventure out of it, but needed to stay in the area since we had to work the next day. So what did we do?

We decided to hop on a ferry boat and head for Vashon Island and Point Robinson.

We arrived to find some clouds on the horizon that had the potential to block our view of the moon until it got higher in the sky. But we had a clear view of the mountain, and it was a lovely night, so we decided to sit back and enjoy the summer evening.

As time goes on, we’re thinking it might not happen this time. We should have been able to see something by now. And then the clouds begin to thin. Then they thin a little more. And then…..there it was! A sight worth waiting for.

Point Defiance Ferry

Point Robinson has views of the Puget Sound, Mount Rainier, and of course the lighthouse. The Sun Surveyor ap I had used indicated that we could get all of these together with the rising full moon in one shot. It was also the first night of the full moon so it would be the easiest to photograph. But even if the calculations were off it should be a fun night so we grabbed our gear and set out on the ferry.

There are 2 or 3 nights when the moon is so large that most of us would call it a ‘full moon’. The first night the moon will come up just as the sun sets or slightly after. This is the easiest to photograph, and this is the one we were planning for. The second and third nights, the moon rises later and later making it more difficult to photograph as the moon is very bright and the landscape is very dark.
