Winter Sunshine in Tacoma
We woke up on a Saturday to one of those rare days (most years) where the sun is shining in the middle of winter! When this happens there are so many things we want to see and do. But on this particular day, we only had a few hours to spare so we need to stay close to home. Not to worry, there are lots of great things to see in the Tacoma area.
Winter days where we live are usually one dark gray day after another. We enjoy the green. We enjoy mild temperatures. We enjoy the coffee. But when the sun shines in the winter, we like to get out and play. I keep a mental list of the places I want to see when blue skies show up this time of year. Here are a few of the places Scott and I like to go.
The Narrows Bridges
On a clear winter day the snow capped Olympic Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the Narrows Bridges. My favorite time to be there is in the morning when the sun first hits the mountains. It’s also a great place to watch the sunset.
A Walk Along Chambers Bay
From the upper parking lot on the south end, you can catch an excellent view of the Olympic Mountains above the Puget Sound and Chambers Bay Golf Course. There are more views from the park below. It’s a great place for a walk any time of day.
Steilacoom
From Sunnyside Beach or Pioneer Orchard Park in Steilacoom you are treated to even more views of the Olympic Mountains. From there you can also see the Steilacoom Ferry boats out on the water.
Fort Steilacoom
There are many things to see at Fort Steilacoom. There’s Waughop Lake, great places for bird watching, and trails everywhere. We usually gravitate towards the red barns, and a place we found where you can see Mount Rainier.
Point Ruston and Ruston Way
Ruston Way and Point Ruston are great year-round. On a sunny day in the winter, they provide one of the best places to view Mount Rainier. The mountain is spectacular in the winter with a fresh coat of snow. When the sun is shining, the water in Commencement Bay reflects the blue sky. It’s a great place to be
