Giant Waves at Cape Disappointment

” You mean the waves are going to get BIGGER? “

The view of the waves crashing below the lighthouse was awesome! It was one of those rare days at Cape Disappointment, when the giant waves coincided with the king tides. When this happens the waves – and the crowds - are even larger.

This, however, was not a time to relax and quietly enjoy the view. These giant waves can be very dangerous knocking around nearby rocks and throwing driftwood. So, I stood there with a constant eye on the waves, and a hand on my equipment ready to retreat at a moment’s notice.

We had arrived early enough to secure a safe spot to view the waves along with dozens of other photographers. It was very windy. I was very cold, and after 3 hours my hands were cramping. I was about ready to call it a day.

It was still around 40 minutes away from high tide, and while we had seen some very spectacular waves, the experienced wave watcher next to me encouraged me to stay a little longer. I’m glad that I did. This shot was taken 20 minutes later.

You can see a few more of our shots taken from this spot in the gallery and store.
