Racehorse Falls - Finding a New Waterfall

We could hear the sound of rushing water. We must be close. We continued down the trail, turned another corner and…..….WOW!

This one did not disappoint. We’d never heard of this waterfall before; located near Maple Falls Washington; but fortunately, the maps on our phones led us there quite easily. It’s a good thing too because I think we would have missed it otherwise. The only physical indication that you’ve arrived is a partial ‘Discovery Pass Required’ sign.

We went on a Saturday and still only saw 2 people the whole time.  I don’t think many people know about this one. It’s a fairly short hike – less than half a mile - with a bit of a scramble at the end.  I love walking through a forest, and the moss and ferns along the trail were incredible! (You can see some of our favorite forest scenes here, and here.) And of course the waterfall was spectacular.

There are 4 or 5 separate falls and a few different viewpoints, but our favorite was the one near bottom. I’m really curious to see what it looks like later in the summer. On warmer days when the water flow is smaller, you may be able to explore other viewpoints. And, I think there could be opportunities to play in the water.

The uphill hike back to the car proved to be much more difficult than the downhill trek out to the falls. Strange how that works. After eating our lunch in the car, we headed toward Maple Falls and Joe’s Fine Coffee. Our favorite local latte’s.

So let’s see. Good company, good coffee, seeing or doing something new, and something spectacular to see and photograph. Yep. A very satisfying trip.
