Takhlakh Lake

Golden Hour on Takhlakh Lake

We approached the lake in the early morning. It was quiet and not many were out and about yet. It was beautiful! Mount Adams was still surrounded by the morning haze, but the lake was clear and calm.

We discovered Takhlakh Lake last year and have been looking forward to returning ever since. So after work on a Friday, we packed the truck and headed out. Our plan was to take advantage of the many dispersed camping sites along Forest Road 23 and its’ offshoots.

Camping at Takhlakh Lake

We had no trouble finding a spot our first night. It even had a great view! The one big bummer is that the propane for our fire pit ran out in only 15 minutes. Apparently, those tank exchanges don’t really fill the tanks all the way. But the easy set up tent and cots worked great. When the fire ran out early, Scott rigged up a way to watch a movie in our tent. It was still a fun night. After our morning coffee and oatmeal, we packed up and set out for the Lake.

Sunset on Takhlakh Lake

Takhlakh really is a beautiful lake! It’s a great place to relax, and slow down. Many people bring their kayaks and canoes, but no motors are allowed (electric only). And did I mention; it’s quite gorgeous!

Sunrise on Takhlakh Lake

After exploring the lake, Scott spoke to the camp host nearby and discovered that there were still a couple of campsites available. We jumped at the opportunity. They offer a small number of dry camp sites that are mostly reserved ahead of time. Apparently, a couple are held back for last minute arrivals. Yes! This allowed us to leave our tent set up while we explored other areas, and it made it easier for us to be at the lake in the prime times of sunset and sunrise.

We had a busy day after that. Refilling our propane tank back in Randal, and then exploring along the forest roads. We found a couple of waterfalls and a few great views of Mount Adams along the way. But the lake was the real star.

Early Morning Mist on Takhlakh Lake

After dinner we walked a few feet to the lake with our chairs and cameras and enjoyed golden hour and then the sunset. When I woke up early in the morning, I was back over to watch the sunrise.

We’re already talking about going back. This time for a longer stay.

On the next adventure.
