Watching the Moonrise Over the Gig Harbor Marina
There’s this stellar view in Gig Harbor that somehow, I always forget about until I’m looking at it again. Each time I wonder to myself ‘why is it I don’t come here more often?’.
Okay, crossing the bridge and paying the $5 toll is probably one reason. For those of us who don’t cross the bridge every week or even every day, there’s something about the bridge that makes it feel farther away. But it really isn’t. And what is a $5 toll for what you get?
This particular evening, we came to watch the moon rise over Mount Rainier and the Gig Harbor Marina. We brought our chairs, iced tea, and our cameras and were ready to enjoy the view. Since the moonrise happens shortly after sunset, we were planning to watch that too.
Sunsets can be some of the best times to view Mount Rainier from the South Sound. The sun setting on the opposite side of the sky can really show off the details of the mountain while giving it a pink glow at the same time.
It wasn’t long before we were joined by others enjoying the view and anticipating what was to come. Some knew there would be a full moon. Others saw our camera equipment and stopped to find out what we were photographing. It’s always fun sharing the experience. As we waited, we saw seals, various birds, and a few boaters go by. And then…..
“I see it!”
“There it is!”
The excitement spreads and we start clicking away amazed at what we are seeing. The moon looks so huge when it is low on the horizon. The color and detail are incredible! The glow in the sky and the reflection in the water are stunning.
We spent the next hour in awe of the sight. Sometimes taking photos, sometimes just enjoying the view. Always amazed.
On to the next adventure!
